Saying Yes to New Opportunities: How Embracing Change Can Boost Confidence for Women Over 50

Boost Confidence for Women Over 50
Kelly Markey - Author and Presenter

Introduction

Life for women over 50 is a time of profound change and reflection. For many women, it's an opportunity to reassess, redefine, and rediscover who they truly are. Whether you've dedicated decades to your career, raised a family, or balanced both, the idea of stepping into something new can be daunting. However, saying "yes" to new opportunities, even when they seem scary, can be a transformative experience that significantly boosts your confidence and competence. At B Styled for Life, we believe that every woman has the potential to grow and thrive at any age, and embracing change is a key part of that journey.

Kelly Markey, Founder of Beacon of Hope who is in our main photograph above is a wonderful example of a woman over 50 who has discovered that her life and its adventures has boosted her confidence. At 22, Kelly made a daring choice to leave her secure government job in South Africa and move to New Zealand, despite doubts from others. The journey was filled with obstacles—complex immigration processes, cultural adjustments, and financial challenges—but these hurdles transformed her. Kelly emerged more resilient, resourceful, and confident. Now a citizen of both Australia and New Zealand, she has worked in five countries and travelled to over 200 cities. By saying "yes" to the unknown, Kelly not only overcame these challenges but also discovered a world of opportunities and personal growth.

The Power of Saying Yes

As we age, it’s easy to fall into patterns of comfort and predictability. We know what we’re good at, we understand our routines, and we’ve mastered the art of balancing our responsibilities. But sometimes, comfort zones can become limiting, preventing us from exploring new avenues that could enrich our lives. Saying "yes" to new opportunities, whether in your personal life, career, or even your style, can open doors to experiences you never imagined possible.

It’s important to recognize that fear is a natural part of the process. The unknown can be intimidating, especially when we feel like we’re stepping into uncharted territory. But it’s in these moments of fear and uncertainty that we grow the most. By embracing the mantra "feel the fear and do it anyway," you empower yourself to move forward, build resilience, and gain new skills and insights.

Embracing Change After 50

For women over 50, the prospect of change can seem overwhelming. After all, many of us have spent years perfecting the lives we've built. However, this stage of life is an ideal time to explore new interests, hobbies, or even career paths that you may have set aside in earlier years. The key is to approach these opportunities with an open mind and a willingness to learn.

One of the most significant benefits of embracing change is the boost in confidence that comes with it. Every time you say "yes" to something new, you prove to yourself that you are capable of adapting and thriving. This confidence spills over into other areas of your life, from your relationships to your professional endeavours. It’s a powerful reminder that age is just a number, and your potential for growth is limitless.

Practical Tips for Saying Yes to New Opportunities

Small Steps Lead to Big Opportunities:

You don’t have to make a huge leap right away. Begin by saying "yes" to opportunities that feel manageable. When I was asked to be a model, despite initially wanting to say no, I thought this was a great opportunity for me, so I decided to say yes. I ended up enjoying trying on different coloured wigs, much like trying on clothes, as a way to learn what suits me best, with the help of a store assistant who guided me in finding the right fit and colour.

Acknowledge your fears:

It’s normal to feel scared when stepping out of your comfort zone. Instead of trying to ignore these feelings, acknowledge them. Understand that fear is a sign that you’re pushing your boundaries, which is exactly where growth happens. Surround Yourself with Support:

Having a strong support system can make all the difference. Whether it’s friends, family, or a community like B Styled for Life, surrounding yourself with people who encourage and uplift you can give you the confidence to take on new challenges.

Reflect on Past Successes:

Look back at times when you’ve successfully embraced change in the past. Reflecting on these moments can remind you of your resilience and give you the courage to tackle new opportunities.
Set Clear Intentions:

When you decide to say "yes" to a new opportunity, set clear intentions about what you hope to gain from the experience. Whether it’s learning a new skill, meeting new people, or simply stepping out of your routine, having a goal in mind can help you stay focused and motivated.

Celebrate Your Wins:

No matter how small the victory, take time to celebrate your successes. Each step forward, no matter how small, is a testament to your courage and commitment to growth.

The Ripple Effect of Confidence

When you say "yes" to new opportunities, the benefits extend far beyond the immediate experience. The confidence you build in one area of your life often creates a ripple effect, positively influencing other aspects as well. For instance, trying a new style of clothing that makes you feel empowered can lead to greater self-assurance in social situations. Similarly, taking on a new role at work can boost your sense of competence, making you more likely to pursue further career advancements.

This ripple effect also impacts your personal relationships. As you grow more confident in yourself, you’re likely to feel more comfortable expressing your needs, desires, and boundaries. This can lead to deeper, more meaningful connections with others, as well as a stronger sense of fulfilment in your interactions.

Competence Through Experience

Another important aspect of saying "yes" to new opportunities is the competence that comes through experience. As you navigate new challenges and learn new skills, you become more adept at handling whatever life throws your way. This competence reinforces your confidence, creating a positive cycle of growth and self-improvement.

For women over 50, this is particularly empowering. It’s a reminder that, no matter your age, you are always capable of learning, evolving, and mastering new things. This mindset not only enhances your personal life but can also open up professional opportunities that you may have previously thought were out of reach.
